Preparing for Holiday Travel

Before you hit the road and head out for Thanksgiving travel, make sure to take the time to prepare for your trip. One of the most important things to do that is often overlooked is some simple preventive maintenance. You want to be prepared for the road ahead and that can help decrease the likelihood of getting stranded or worse. Here’s a short list of some of the things you can do to be prepared:

  • Replace worn out wiper blades

  • Check your tire pressure regularly

  • Also check tread depth, wear, and for anything that’s penetrated a tire

  • Keep your gas tank at least half full

  • Check to make sure your rear window defroster is working

  • Have your vehicle serviced before long drives

  • Have an updated safety/emergency kit

Keep your eye on the weather. Remember that even here on the coast, the weather can surprise us. Even more so if you’re heading inland and through any mountain passes. This will help you stay prepared and ready for the unexpected. If you are heading through or over any mountain passes, it is better to be over prepared than underprepared. Your emergency kit should include blankets, warm clothes, flares, extra food and water, flashlights and extra batteries, jumper cables and/or a jump kit, extra antifreeze, an ice scraper, and anything else that you or your family may need in an emergency situation. A lot of these items are good to have regardless of the weather conditions and don’t forget to include any medications you’re currently taking.

If you are traveling with children, you’ll want to help minimize the distractions they can often provide. Keeping them entertained can help make the journey far more enjoyable for everyone.

  • Take snacks that are easy to consume without making too much of a mess or getting them too amped up on sugar (nuts, cheese sticks, cut veggies, apples, grapes, etc.)

  • Frequent stops to change things up and to get out and stretch (these are wonderful for adults and children alike)

  • Books (if they don’t get motion sick)

  • Games that don’t require boards or small pieces that are easily lost

  • DVDs or their favorite music that they can hook up to headphones so as not to be distracting to anyone else

The more prepared you are, the smoother your trip will be for everyone. When you need some help with preventive maintenance or even repairs, bring it into CARSTAR Robert's Auto Repair.
