Safety on the Road This Summer

Typically when we think of unsafe driving conditions, we think of winter driving. Yet the statics show that there are far more fatal accidents over the summer months, most likely due to people getting out on the road for vacations and an increase in road work. There’s a lot you can do, however, to minimize your risk of getting in an accident. A little bit of prevention can go a long way!

  1. More teens on the road: Not only does this add to the sheer number of vehicles on the road, but also the number of inexperienced drivers makes for more reasons to proceed with caution. Encourage your teen to follow safe-driving practices such as no cell phones or eating while driving.

  2. Motorcycles, bikes, pedestrians: We are sharing the road with an increase in not just teenagers, but other folks wanting to take advantage of the sunshine. Give yourself 4 seconds behind a motorcycle and make sure to keep your sunglasses handy to that the glare won’t keep you from seeing cyclists and pedestrians on the roadside.

  3. Road construction and maintenance: Tis the season for road work! While not fun at the time, it sure makes for nicer roads in the long-run but can prove a road hazard if we are completely focused on our own driving.

  4. Pack an emergency kit: Flashlights with fresh batteries, non-perishable foods, blanket, first-aid kit, jumper cables, tire sealant, any daily medications, allergy meds, ibuprofen.

  5. Checking tires before hitting the road: Doing this one simple thing can help increase your gas mileage and decrease the likelihood of a tire blowing out on your trip.

  6. Taking patience with you: Road rage is real, people! Don’t contribute to the problem, be a part of the solution. Have some calming tunes at the ready and don’t be in a hurry. Give yourself the extra time you need in case your trip has a time-sensitive component. It will make for a way better experience.

  7. Pay attention: Set your navigation up before starting to drive; don’t touch your phone; wait to eat until your car is stopped; have sunglasses at the ready for any glare; notice changing weather and road conditions and shift your driving accordingly; give yourself plenty of space between you and the car ahead of you; if the car behind is too close, get out of their way and let them pass; always consider your safety first!

  8. Maintaining your vehicle: Before heading out on the road, make sure your vehicle is road-ready. Checking your battery life, all fluids, tire pressure can go a long way in keeping you on the road. Take time to have routine maintenance done before heading out on your next trip.

Taking the time to plan ahead and investing in a little bit of preventative maintenance will keep you humming along this summer and will greatly reduce the likelihood of a breakdown or accident.
