5 Ways To Enjoy Memorial Day Weekend At Home On The Monterey Peninsula

With the Shelter In Place Ordinance lasting until May 31st here on the Monterey Peninsula, the Memorial Day Weekend is expected to look a little different in 2020. We won’t be able to gather in large groups to celebrate the traditional kick-off to Summer, but we are very fortunate to live and work in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Living on the Monterey Peninsula has its benefits. The temperature is never too hot or too cold. Our Monterey Bay is breathtakingly beautiful. We have some of the most legendary golf courses in our backyard. Plus, we are a community filled with wonderful people who have added much richness to our long history. Truly, if we cannot go anywhere during the Memorial Day Weekend, staying here at home is not a bad thing at all.

However, if you are looking to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, here are five ways to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend.

  1. Go camping in your own backyard. If you have a large enough backyard, why not set up a tent and spend the night outside? Backyard camping is fun, safe, and you don’t have to worry about being too far from the comforts of home. Backyard camping could be a super enjoyable way to spend quality time with the family.

  2. Go for a hike and bring your face masks. There are plenty of hiking trails here on the Monterey Peninsula. If you don’t want to drive far, just take a walk along the Rec Trail, visit Asilomar Beach, or hike the Quarry Park to Veterans Park in downtown Monterey.

  3. Visit the Lower Presidio Historic Park. If you want great views of Monterey Bay from a quieter vantage point, park the car and walk around the lower half of the Army Presidio. The statue of Father Junipero Serra looks over Fisherman’s Wharf and you can easily practice social distancing since the park is rather large.

  4. Go scuba diving. Granted, you can’t really go scuba diving if you don’t have a dive buddy, a full air tank, and the proper diving equipment with weights. But if you do have the ability to fully suit up, the water looks spectacular! Scuba diving naturally lends itself to social distancing, but be sure you always keep an eye on your dive buddy for safety. You don’t want to be putting yourself or your buddy at risk while out in the water, nor do you want to have the Coast Guard come to rescue you. Be extra safe while scuba diving.

  5. Host a virtual BBQ. With all the Zoom meetings going on, why not host a virtual Memorial Day Weekend BBQ with your friends and family? You can all get online and spend quality time together, eating and drinking from the safety of your own home. There are several advantages to a virtual BBQ, for you won’t have to worry about drinking and driving, nor cleaning up after a large crowd

We hope you enjoyed these suggestions on how to celebrate the holiday weekend at home on the Monterey Peninsula.
