Getting yourself out of harm's way before anything else is important. 2. Check for injuries.  Once you're in a safe place, take a moment to check yourself for injuries. What Is A Direct Repair Vendor & How Can That Help Me?

By Adobe Photo Stock The Peace of Mind a Direct Repair Vendor Brings Have you ever wondered what goes into repairing your car after an accident? Many people are unaware of the process and assume their insurance company will take care of everything. However, that is not always the case.   Depending on your insurance company, they may refer you to a specific auto body or collision repair shop for repairs; or give you a list of pre-approved shops to choose from. But what does it mean to be pre-approved, and how does that benefit you? What Does "Direct Repair Vendor" Mean? The term "direct repair vendor" (DRV) refers to an auto body shop that an insurance company has approved to provide repairs for their policyholders. DRVs are held to a higher standard than other auto body shops because they are vetted and approved by the insurance company.   This means that they must meet certain criteria to be considered a DRV, such as being up-to-date on the latest ... read more

Don't Ignore That Dent! The Benefits of Exterior Detailing

By Adobe Photo Stock Why You Shouldn't Ignore a Dent in Your Car We've all been there. We're driving along and suddenly hear a loud 'thump!' We pull over to investigate and find a large dent in our car. Our first impulse is to ignore it.   After all, it's just a cosmetic issue, right? Wrong! While it may not seem like a big deal, that dent can actually cause some serious problems down the road if you don't take care of it immediately.  Structural Damage One of the most important functions of your car's exterior is to provide structural support. In a minor fender bender, that dent can cause your car's frame to warp. That might not seem like a big deal, but a warped frame can lead to all sorts of problems, including alignment issues and a decrease in the overall integrity of your car. Not to mention, it'll make your car look like junk! Decreased Resale Value Even if you're not planning on selling your car any time soon, it ... read more

How To Prevent Your Car From Getting Sunburnt

How To Prevent Your Car From Getting Sunburnt

Sunburnt paint. We've all seen it. That beautiful brightly colored car paint fades and chips away when exposed to the elements for too long. Most people would say that this is a process everybody goes through sooner or later. However, it should not be like that! If we just followed a couple of simple steps, we could prevent ourselves from the headaches of repairing the car paint of a sun-damaged car. Here's what to do. Park under trees.  In most cases, wherever you go, there's usually a tree or two by the parking lot. The trees help shade your car, which keeps your car cooler. But watch out for tree sap getting on your paint job!  But what if there are no trees?  Whenever possible, seek out covered parking lots or garages that block out the sun's UV rays. These covered parking places may not be offered for free. However, most stores allow you to park for free for 2 hours. This is more than enough time to conduct your business and keep your car fresh ... read more

Why Does Paint Fade and Peel?

Why Does Paint Fade and Peel?

Photo by Denin Lawley on Unsplash   Have you ever seen how a car’s paint job can fade and peel over time? What causes the paint on an automobile to lose its brightness and start to flake off? Can it be prevented?   The short answer is yes, you can protect your truck’s paint from fading, cracking, peeling, and oxidizing. But first, let’s explain why car paint peels and fades over time.   Exposure to the sun and salt water will make the color -- especially red, which is the fastest of all colors to fade -- lose its shine and reduce the saturation of the paint color. This is caused by oxidation. Over time, oxidation will cause the paint to peel and chip away.   Dings, scratches, and dents ... read more

What Does Your TPMS Do And What Is It Trying To Tell You?

Have you ever noticed on a colder-than-average morning here in Monterey County, your vehicle notifies you that your tires are under-inflated?  If you have experienced that, it is a function of your car’s TPMS, which is the Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Cool, huh? Modern vehicles are pretty darned smart. There are numerous computer modules and sensors throughout your car, and the TPMS is one of them. But what exactly does your TPMS do, and what is it trying to tell you? To break it down to its essence, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System senses if your tires are under-inflated, over-inflated, or just right. Before the TPMS became a standard dashboard light feature in modern vehicles, drivers were taught to inspect their tires each time before they got in the car. That is why you hear colloquialisms like “tire kicking” and “kicking tires”. A visual inspection before each trip would give the driver an idea if the tires had a flat or if they were sa ... read more

What Is Waterborne Paint & What’s So Special About It?

Years ago, our auto body repair shop was the first of all auto repair shops to receive Green certification from the Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program. What To Do When There’s No Monterey Car Week

This COVID-19 pandemic has really changed our “normal” way of life here on the Monterey Peninsula, hasn’t it? Since March, we have been encouraged to Shelter In Place, stay at home, only travel for essential business, and stay in our neighborhoods. Multiple events have been canceled, and one of them is our beloved Monterey Car Week. Monterey Car Week is an annual event that many of us -- especially die-hard auto enthusiasts -- look forward to every year. We have made it an annual tradition of sending our marketing gal out to the various open-to-the-public car shows to take photos and share them with our car buddies. We are truly going to miss celebrating Monterey Car Week, for it is an event that brings in approximately $50 Million in annual revenue for the hotels, restaurants, venues, and supporting industries on the Monterey Peninsula. With deep respect, we honor the intention of reducing the risk of exposure to the COVID-19 virus, and we do encourage everyone to ... read more

Happy Memorial Day! Did you enjoy celebrating at home on the Monterey Peninsula?

Happy Memorial Day. Today is a day to thank and remember the military personnel who gave their lives so we could enjoy our freedoms. Before we go any further, we want to encourage you to take a moment and reflect on all of the people in your life who have sacrificed and served our country. Last week, we suggested 5 ways to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend while sheltering in place on the Monterey Peninsula. We’re curious. Did you go camping in your backyard? Did you get outside and go for a hike? Did you visit a park, get in the water, or have a virtual BBQ with your friends? Look, today is Memorial Day and it’s time for you to have some fun. Even if you don’t go anywhere, take some time for self-care and enjoy the day off. You deserve some down time. After the holiday, that’s when you can jump back into work and find ways to keep yo ... read more

Window Tinting - Pros and Cons

Window Tinting - Pros and Cons

Window tint - Pros and Cons Tinted windows are great for a number of reasons. They can block dangerous UV rays, they look good, and also offer some privacy, so you don't feel like you are driving in a fishbowl when on the road. Keep in mind; there is such a thing as too dark of tint.   Is It Legal? In the south, we encounter many cars with really dark tinted windows. The advantage of dark tint is heat repellant and UV ray reduction. The intense heat of the south does tend to tax your air conditioner, so it is an advantage. As we move to the northern states, dark tint tends to signal that whoever is inside may have reason to hide. Many states have laws in place to limit the tinting of vehicle windows.   Vision Limitation Yes, tinted windows can keep your eyes from sun damage, on darker days, that same tint can impede your vision. Missing an animal crossing the road, a car without headlights, or worse yet, a child running into the way could mean ultimate disaster. It ... read more

Vehicle Computer Diagnosis Simplified and Explained

Vehicle Computer Diagnosis Simplified and Explained

You are most likely aware that computers now monitor and control nearly every component of your vehicle. Depending on your experience and knowledge, you may think that a car's computer will "tell" you what is going on with your vehicle. Others believe that when a scan tool is like magic; when plugged into their car that the issue is reset, never to come back again. Some folks are terrified of the entire diagnosing process, and some use the computer diagnosis process to seem like an auto whisperer of sorts.   The code reading process is quite simple when broken down. There is a scan tool called a DLC device (Diagnostic Link Connector). Many brands and types are available that have varying capabilities depending on quality. Simple scan tools are only code readers that scan your vehicle's memory for stored DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).   It is a common misconception that the DTC codes stored in your car's computer will tell you precisely what ... read more

What is a clutch?

What is a clutch?

Accelerating and decelerating should be a smooth, uneventful process. If you feel your car shifting hard, be sure to bring it to the auto mechanics at CARSTAR Robert's Collision and Repair in Monterey, your one-stop repair shop. Catching your shifting issues early can save you a lot of money and be as easy as an adjustment.   Some folks say a clutch is the foot pedal to the left of your brake on the floor of your manual transmission vehicle. Yes, they are half right, the far-left foot pedal is the actual switch which activated the clutch assembly. However, the location of the clutch itself is in your transmission. Does your automatic have a clutch? The answer is yes. An automatic transmission does have a clutch in addition to having sensors automating the activation process, so no foot pedal is needed when driving.   There are five main parts in your clutch that, together, work to sync your engine and wheels, allowing your engine to rev at full speed while you ... read more

What is OEM insurance?

What is OEM insurance?

What is OEM insurance?   When shopping for an auto insurance policy, it is essential to ask yourself if OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts are non-negotiable. If you feel strongly about having your car repaired with OEM parts, then it will be necessary for you to shop for OEM insurance.   OEM insurance is additional coverage on your car that is an add on to your insurance policy. It ensures that OEM parts will be used to repair your vehicle rather than aftermarket parts. You then have a guarantee that your car is restored to factory specifications with parts specifically made and engineered by your auto manufacturer for your specific vehicle. Each part has been through a rigorous safety and quality-check process by your vehicle's manufacturer.   If you have been in a car accident, be sure to request OEM parts in advance. If your insurance policy does not cover OEM parts and using them for your vehicle repair is essential to you, Robert's CARSTAR Co ... read more

What to do if your car overheats!

What to do if your car overheats!

Even the most proactive vehicle owner can find themselves dealing with a car that’s overheated. It’s true that if you stay on a regular preventive maintenance schedule, not only will you save yourself money in the long run, you’ll significantly decrease the chances of ending up broken down on the side of the road.     Regardless, if it ever happens to you, make sure you know what to do to minimize the damage that’s already been done. The worst thing you can do is to keep driving it like nothing's wrong.    Your best bet is to pull over immediately. The more you drive after it overheats, the more extensive the damage. Even so, stay safe and pull over in a good location and turn off the engine. Don’t be in a hurry to open the hood. Wait until it’s completely cooled down. You may not be able to see that on your temperature gauge on the dash, so just don’t rush.  Pull out your owner’s manual if you&r ... read more

Oil change, shmoil change. Who needs it?!

Oil change, shmoil change. Who needs it?!

If you’re like me, you don’t pay as much attention to the needs of your car as often as you should. For most of us, we know what we like in the way of auto aesthetics and we want to get to where we need to go with as little challenge as possible. Well, that’s all fine and dandy, but if we refuse to provide our vehicle with some much-needed love, then it might simply refuse to love us in return and leave us stranded on the roadside. It’s not just about a pretty face and just like humans, if we don’t take care of what’s under the hood, the results will not be kind to us.  Yes, cars these days can often go much longer than the olden-days-recommended 3,000 miles, but they still need changing once in awhile. Oil is the lubricant your engine needs in order to run. Period. Without it, your engine will seize up and you’ll be looking at either a seriously ridiculous repair bill or you will need to buy a new (to you) car. Preferably one whose owner ... read more
