Celebrating National Native American Day in Monterey, CA

Celebrating National Native American Day in Monterey, CA

While Columbus Day is observed annually on the second Monday of October, not all states follow this traditional holiday. Instead, they choose to celebrate other events that same day. Enter: National Native American Day! Also known as Native American Day and Indigenous People’s Day, observers of this holiday choose to celebrate the heritage of Native Americans and to share knowledge of the native peoples who have been here since before the start of the American story. Celebrated in South Dakota and Berkeley, California, instead of Columbus Day and statewide in California as a day of observance on the fourth Friday of September, this holiday is meant to uplift and highlight the cultures of our country’s first nations. Many people who celebrate Native Americans’ Day do so through teaching and learning about the traditions, culture, and heritage of Native American peoples. This is frequently paired with awareness-raising activities about their history that aren’t al ... read more

History of the California Admission Day

History of the California Admission Day

A frequently ignored holiday, California Admission Day is the legal holiday in our great state of California that is celebrated as a way to commemorate the anniversary of the 1850 admission of California into the United States Union as the 31st state. Leading up to this day, in 1848, Mexico and the United States had signed a treaty that ended the Mexican War and gave over a significant portion of the Pacific Southwest to the United States. This included California. Just days before the signing of this treaty, gold was discovered along the American River near Sacramento, which pushed forward our state’s admittance into the Union. With the ensuing increase in population from the goldrush, California was in dire need of a civil government presence. In 1849, California sought out statehood as a part of the United States Union. After heated debate among our Congress due to the discussion of slavery, California was entered into the Union. It was soon entered proudly in as the 31st stat ... read more

The History of Toyota

The History of Toyota

Founded in 1937 by visionary Kiichiro Toyoda, early designs were modeled after the Chevy and Dodge Power Wagon. During WWII, Toyota was contracted to build trucks for the imperial Japanese army, which once the war was lost, both the country and Toyota were thrust into economic instability. Finally, in 1947, Toyota built its first passenger car, which helped bring them through. Is It Okay To Have Dogs In The Front Seat?

Is It Okay To Have Dogs In The Front Seat?

Most of us dog lovers, want our pup with us in the car. We all have to take our dog here and there, be it the groomers, or just enjoying a ride together. There is not much more satisfying than jingling your keys, and seeing that cute tail wag; we love more opportunities to spend time with Fido. More than half of us drive with our dogs more than once per month. That is a lot of pup's in the car on the road!   When we bring our human family in the car, we make sure they are buckled up, which begs the question, why would we not do the same for our four-legged furry friends? If you decide to take Fido along in the car for a ride, consider investing in a dog safety belt and buckle them into the back seat for safety. If you think of it, a dog that is loose in the car in a time of impact not only becomes a missile, there is a high chance of them getting thrown out of the window. If your pup is in the front seat and an airbag goes off, they will be severely injured. We all know and se ... read more

Overhang - Know your hauling limits

Overhang - Know your hauling limits

Sometimes when we leave the hardware store we find ourselves looking at the lumber or carpet we purchased, compare it to the size of our car and realize that what seemed like a great idea in the store now poses a potential transportation issue. How far is too far? Well, this is an easy enough question to answer. You can hang items over the front of your vehicle up to three feet, four feet past the rear of your car and four inches on each side of your car.   If you have items that overhang past four feet, it must be properly marked with a red flag on each side, the load needs to have some type of side marker as close to the front and rear, plus two reflectors. In reality, our cars and trucks won't really have a big issue with this, anything that much larger than your vehicle then a professional delivery will be a better option. If you need to use your personal vehicle to transport an item, then you will need to abide by the same laws that commercial trucks follow.   Secure ... read more

Do you need to fix or replace lights that fog up?

Do you need to fix or replace lights that fog up?

How does moisture get into our headlights, anyway? No one wants to find moisture in their headlights, especially if you have invested in custom lights for your car. Finding moisture in your headlights doesn't mean your headlights are damaged or broken, or that you need to run out and buy a new pair. Fear not, although you may find a foggy cloud inside your headlights on occasion, they might still be just fine. Condensation that forms in your headlight is something that happens when the air outside of your headlight is cooler than the air inside the lens. If you drive around for a few hours, more than likely, the moisture will dissipate because your headlights have warmed up. Most headlights have tiny vents on the top and bottom of each headlight; for this reason, these vents will allow moisture to come in, and escape as needed.   Have you special ordered new headlights, and received them, opened the package to find them fogged up? This can be a very distressing occurrence, and ... read more

Minimizing Distractions Inside Your Vehicle

Distracted driving is more and more common on the road these days, and has become the number one killer, literally even more than drunk driving. We are all guilty from time to time of driving distracted in one way or another, it is human to do so, and ultimately convenient to multi-task. Window Tinting - Pros and Cons

Window Tinting - Pros and Cons

Window tint - Pros and Cons Tinted windows are great for a number of reasons. They can block dangerous UV rays, they look good, and also offer some privacy, so you don't feel like you are driving in a fishbowl when on the road. Keep in mind; there is such a thing as too dark of tint.   Is It Legal? In the south, we encounter many cars with really dark tinted windows. The advantage of dark tint is heat repellant and UV ray reduction. The intense heat of the south does tend to tax your air conditioner, so it is an advantage. As we move to the northern states, dark tint tends to signal that whoever is inside may have reason to hide. Many states have laws in place to limit the tinting of vehicle windows.   Vision Limitation Yes, tinted windows can keep your eyes from sun damage, on darker days, that same tint can impede your vision. Missing an animal crossing the road, a car without headlights, or worse yet, a child running into the way could mean ultimate disaster. It ... read more

Alternative Parts Use

Alternative Parts Use

Aftermarket and alternative parts have their place in the repair process.   Believe it or not, some vehicles over four years of age begin encountering challenges when tracking down replacement parts. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts may simply no longer be available, and the only option becomes aftermarket or salvaged parts to repair your vehicle.   Remember that for your monthly premium to remain affordable; insurance companies use aftermarket parts in the repair process. Would you use a cheaper part to save money if the two were nearly identical in every way? How about reusing a component that is still good? Insurance companies are faced with this same challenge, and so have come up with policies and protocols to streamline their approval process throughout your automobiles repair.   Collision shops love the fit and feel of an OEM part; it is the preferred part to work with. If aftermarket parts are available and insurance will not pay for an O ... read more

What is OEM insurance?

What is OEM insurance?

What is OEM insurance?   When shopping for an auto insurance policy, it is essential to ask yourself if OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts are non-negotiable. If you feel strongly about having your car repaired with OEM parts, then it will be necessary for you to shop for OEM insurance.   OEM insurance is additional coverage on your car that is an add on to your insurance policy. It ensures that OEM parts will be used to repair your vehicle rather than aftermarket parts. You then have a guarantee that your car is restored to factory specifications with parts specifically made and engineered by your auto manufacturer for your specific vehicle. Each part has been through a rigorous safety and quality-check process by your vehicle's manufacturer.   If you have been in a car accident, be sure to request OEM parts in advance. The Difference Between OEM and Aftermarket Parts

The Difference Between OEM and Aftermarket Parts

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between OEM and aftermarket parts?   OEM parts are designed by the same factory and the same equipment your car has been built with. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. These parts are an exact match and are equivalent to the parts your vehicle was made initially when new from the factory.   AFTERMARKET replacement parts made in different factories from molds, templates, or casts that attempt to replicate your original car's components. Some aftermarket parts are reverse-engineered and designed to improve the performance of your vehicle, however many of these "generic" parts made in mass quantity with cost savings in mind. These parts don't quite fit or operate as well as OEM parts and can compromise the quality of your repair. Sometimes this can mean your car's body panels don't fit or match up, as well as your original part did.   In the collision industry, some certified ... read more

Improving Fuel Efficiency in Winter

Improving Fuel Efficiency in Winter

Fuel efficiency can easily start with your tires. When we head into the colder months, even though we live in a temperate climate, it still affects your tires and your fuel efficiency. In general, the colder weather can greatly affect your vehicle’s fuel economy. It takes longer for your engine to warm up and reach its best fuel consumption temperature.  When the weather changes, make sure you regularly check the air pressure in your tires because they fluctuate with the weather. When the air pressure is just right, you’ll get the most out of your tires and your fuel efficiency will improve.  When you are looking for more ways to improve fuel efficiency, try these suggestions: Whenever possible, park in the warmest place. If you have an option to park in a garage, do so. Any shelter will help with warmth.  Even on cold days, don’t warm up your car too much. The longer you idle, the less fuel-efficient your car. When we drive, we can take for granted the amount of wear and tear our car takes, but the lens of our headlights also takes a beating from the bugs, UV rays, dirt, and gravel.  Clean lenses provide increased visibility and improved safety, but when they get worn, they get cloudy, yellowed (caused by UV rays reaction with the polycarbonate material that almost all headlights are made from), and decrease just how far you’re going to be able to see. At night, decreased visibility severely increases the likelihood of something going wrong. Your headlights are your eyes and you want them clean and at peak condition. Thankfully, replacing them is not the only way to ensure that you’re safe driving at night. The auto repair team of highly skilled auto mechanics at CARSTAR Robert’s Collision & ... read more

Tire Wear & Tear: What to Look For!

When is it time to replace your tires? You’ll want to partner with your auto repair experts to get the most out of your tires. If you properly care for your tires, not only will you get better gas mileage, but you’ll be able to get many more months and miles out of them before having to invest in a new set. Take a look at the photo below to see signs of a problem before it gets any worse.    Here are some tips on what to look for and how to get the most out of them: Get in the habit of looking for wear and tear on your tires. The more you know your tires, the easier it will be to identify a problem. Regularly check the air pressure in your tires and when you do that, take that time to give the rest of your tire a once over.  Inspect the tire tread depth and wear. Use a penny to help you assess the depth. If you can’t see Lincoln’s head because it’s well nestled into a deep tread, you’re good to go. If it’s completely exposed ... read more

What To Do If Your Check Engine Light Goes On

What To Do If Your Check Engine Light Goes On

Unless it’s blinking, don’t panic! If it IS blinking, you shouldn’t drive it at all. It could mean imminent damage to your catalytic converter. In case you don’t know, catalytic converter repairs are expensive. They are the most expensive component of your emissions system. Every other component of your emissions system does their smaller part before handing it off to the catalytic converter to clean up your exhaust before it hits the atmosphere.     If it’s blinking, still don’t panic. Instead, find the first safe place you can pull over and then call for a tow truck to get it to your trusted auto repair facility. This really is an indication that you could be in trouble and you don’t want to wait until your car breaks down in the middle of an intersection and your auto repair bill is astronomical before you react to that blinking light.    If it’s not blinking, but it is on, you don’t need to immed ... read more

Aluminum is the New Steel

Aluminum is the New Steel

If you don’t already own a vehicle made out of aluminum, there’s a really good chance you will at some point during your lifetime. Most folks don’t know that aluminum was first used in the production of automobiles over 100 years ago, back in 1899. It was not the go-to for many reasons, but that has changed. In 2015 Ford introduced its all-aluminum-body F150 and that was a game-changer! That immediately shed 700 pounds from the truck body, but it also increased gas mileage. When we start talking aluminum, it’s not just about weight, per se. There are many other benefits of using aluminum vs. steel. The main push toward using aluminum has mostly to do with outcries from the Populus to increase gas mileage at every possible turn. Their engines are smaller, yet can produce the same if not greater power, all the while decreasing fuel consumption. Here are a few of the main benefits of using aluminum in the -industry: Safer: they are at least as strong, if not strong ... read more

Safe Driving Tips

Safe Driving Tips

Summer months we tend to think of as the safer time of year to drive, but it’s actually when most accidents happen. Because we think it’s safer, we tend to take more risks and driving conditions for granted. We are less likely to leave enough space between us and the car in front of us and more likely to speed. There are many ways, however, we can reduce the likelihood of an accident.   A lot of it is common sense, but we all know that it’s not a bad thing to be reminded of even some of the most obvious ones:     Don’t drive distracted: this means no texting, no phone chatting, don’t look up your next destination on your GPS, no eating, no searching for your favorite radio station. Leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Follow the 3-second rule under normal driving condition, giving yourself a full 3 seconds between you and the car ahead. During wet or frosty times, or when pulling a trailer, give yourself at l ... read more

Getting Your Car Ready for Summer

Getting Your Car Ready for Summer

We do live in a close-to-perfect-weather part of the world, but there is still a transition into summer every year. We put away our sweaters and pull out our shorts and summer dresses. Even though our summer preparations are not as intense as some other parts of our country, there are still action items we like to cross off our to-do lists when the weather gets warmer. It can be easy to forget about the needs of our vehicles as we go into summer, but it’s something we shouldn’t forget.   Summer means warmer weather and this also means a change in tire pressure simply because of the change in the weather. Definitely check the pressure, but also take the time to check for wear and tear as well as tread depth. Rotate those ties regularly too and don’t forget about the care of your spare as well. No one wants to deal with a flat without a spare. When your tires are in good health, you get the best gas mileage and you’ll have the most control of your car as you ... read more

Monaco Grand Prix: Formula One's Most Prestigious Race

Monaco Grand Prix: Formula One's Most Prestigious Race

May is the month for the Monaco Grand Prix. This is one of three races around the world that constitutes the Triple Crown of Motorsports. The other two are the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Monaco Grand Prix is a spectacular event that is unique in so many ways. It began in 1929 and is comprised of roadways in Monte Carlo and La Condamine. Many spectators view the race from yachts on the harbor and the racing scene extends well into the night with glamorous all night partying.   Its tight turns and tunnel force drivers to shift more than 50 times in a single lap. This is why pit strategy becomes so important in this race. It’s not just about the power of the car or even the acumen of the driver; the pit crew can make or break who crosses with the checkered flag.   In the earlier years of the race, safety regulations were not in place and it was common for drivers to run into walls, buildings, and even a couple of them landed in the Mediterranea ... read more

National Car Care Month!

National Car Care Month!

Woo-hoo! Winter is finally over, and Spring is here with Summer just around the corner. April is your vehicles favorite month because it’s all about getting pampered for upcoming adventures and trips.  National Car Car Month is to remind and encourage you to bring your vehicle in and fix any issues that you have been putting off since winter. Yes, that means it’s time to take care of that rattle sound when accelerating or that screeching noise you’re hearing when you break. If you put off a problem for too long it could worsen and cause other issues, you don’t want that to happen as the weather finally gets nice.  Winter hazards are over, and Spring ones are coming. You should get your tires and brakes checked and replaced if needed. Spring showers can cause the roads to get very wet and slick, you want to be able to stop without sliding or hydroplaning. Why Should Women Become Auto Mechanics?

Why Should Women Become Auto Mechanics?

Women should become auto mechanics if that is what their heart’s desire. There is no better time than right now to make this happen. There is a considerable shortage of qualified technicians and service advisors. That leaves the doors wide open for women to step in and take their place in this industry. With only 2% of the auto repair workforce checking the female box, it’s just a matter of time before that number significantly increases. Women mechanics work just as hard as the men do, tend to have better attention to detail than most men, and their communication skills are often much better than their male counterparts. These are generalizations, but you get the gist. There is room, and a need, for women in this industry. Any woman who is interested in becoming an auto mechanic or technician should pursue a career in the industry. There is an old stereotype that the automotive industry is a "man's world" and while much of that still rings true, more and m ... read more

Wanna increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency?

Life might be a highway, but when you’re speeding along, you’re probably not getting the most out of your fuel consumption. Do you want to know some great ways to increase fuel efficiency? Everyone wants to save money, but oftentimes we throw it away because we are careless or just don’t know how best to do it. When it comes to fuel efficiency, here are some solid suggestions that has the power to improve yours 5-25%: 1.       Don’t road rage. When you are flying past the guy that was just ahead of you or your slamming on your breaks, not only is that bad for your blood pressure, it’s also bad for your gas mileage. Set your cruise control so it keeps you even-steven. 2.       We know this won’t work on the freeways, but keep in mind you get the best gas mileage when you’re going around 50 miles an hour. This is currently the best speed for the best gas mileage. We know that it won’t always matter ... read more

Flying WHAT? Cars???

 Flying WHAT? Cars???

Flying cars aren’t just for Harry Potter and his friends. When it comes to the future, we don’t always know what it holds, but we do know that flying automobiles will become something real instead of something that’s been relegated to the imagination. From flying delivery trucks to airbuses… okay, so it won’t exactly look like Fed-Ex and UPS trucks with wings, but you will have to look to the skies to see them coming. A lot of the technology being developed focuses on automation as well as the bigger issues our current modes of transportation presents. Boeing is working on numerous technologies that will lead to automated ways to get around in a ride-sharing capacity. So not only will we be flying around when we want to get somewhere, but it won’t even (necessarily) be us doing the flying.   Big companies like Boeing aren’t the only ones diving into the world of aerial travel; plenty of do-it-yourselfers are hitting it hard too. Ahhh… Spring is in the Air - Time for Spring Cleaning

We may not be completely into spring, but groundhog Punxsutawney Phil said spring should be in full force about now. What that means for us here in beautiful Monterey is that it’s time for some spring cleaning!   It’s time to change your car’s air filter for one. Your owner’s manual probably says every 12,000 to 15,000, but if you have problems with dust and pollen you might want to do that sooner. Keep the cabin of your car free from bad smells as well as things that might make ya sneeze. Achoo! Bless you!  It’s also good for your engine. Your air filter holds dual responsibilities in keeping your interior clean but also keeps the debris and dirt out of your engine. When your air filter has broken down, it lets in the things that can lead to real problems for your engine and no one wants that! Give your car a good washing! Use a little white vinegar and water on your wheels to get them sparkly clean. Another good trick for your paint jo ... read more

Monterey: Where Spring is the Secret Summer

Monterey: Where Spring is the Secret Summer

To say that Monterey is such a beautiful place to visit seems redundant. If you are fortunate enough to LIVE here, then you should be steeped in gratitude. It would be kinda hard not to be, really. Think about this time of year and how many parts of the country aren’t necessarily steeped in gratitude but in snow, sleet, and downright terrible weather! Makes me shiver simply to think about it. We often refer to our spring as being a “secret summer” for a reason: The temps are mild, skies mostly clear, and not much fog. What more could a person ask for? That’s why so many people want to live here and when they can’t, they still want to visit. Can’t blame them, that’s for sure! One of the most amazing aspects of this area is the sheer amount or wildflowers that grace our hillsides and coastline. If this is something that floats your boat, here are some of the top spots in the area: Garrapata State Park (irises, poppies, Indian Paintbrush) ... read more

Oil change, shmoil change. Who needs it?!

Oil change, shmoil change. Who needs it?!

If you’re like me, you don’t pay as much attention to the needs of your car as often as you should. For most of us, we know what we like in the way of auto aesthetics and we want to get to where we need to go with as little challenge as possible. Well, that’s all fine and dandy, but if we refuse to provide our vehicle with some much-needed love, then it might simply refuse to love us in return and leave us stranded on the roadside. It’s not just about a pretty face and just like humans, if we don’t take care of what’s under the hood, the results will not be kind to us.  Yes, cars these days can often go much longer than the olden-days-recommended 3,000 miles, but they still need changing once in awhile. Oil is the lubricant your engine needs in order to run. Period. Without it, your engine will seize up and you’ll be looking at either a seriously ridiculous repair bill or you will need to buy a new (to you) car. Preferably one whose owner ... read more
