Monterey: Where Spring is the Secret Summer

Monterey: Where Spring is the Secret Summer

To say that Monterey is such a beautiful place to visit seems redundant. If you are fortunate enough to LIVE here, then you should be steeped in gratitude. It would be kinda hard not to be, really. Think about this time of year and how many parts of the country aren’t necessarily steeped in gratitude but in snow, sleet, and downright terrible weather! Makes me shiver simply to think about it. We often refer to our spring as being a “secret summer” for a reason: The temps are mild, skies mostly clear, and not much fog. What more could a person ask for? That’s why so many people want to live here and when they can’t, they still want to visit. Can’t blame them, that’s for sure! One of the most amazing aspects of this area is the sheer amount or wildflowers that grace our hillsides and coastline. If this is something that floats your boat, here are some of the top spots in the area: Garrapata State Park (irises, poppies, Indian Paintbrush) ... read more

How Much do you LOVE Car Shows? We’ve compiled a short list of some of the top car shows in the United States.

Americans love cars. To us, they are a symbol of freedom, independence and even if the make is foreign, part of the American dream. Also, there’s nothing better than spending an afternoon, or sometimes even a week, checking out the cars that are part of our history and heritage, or getting a glimpse at what the future holds. If you are a car-show enthusiast, these 10 should be on your bucket list. Some you can even squeeze in this summer and then put the rest on your calendar for next year.  This first one is right in our backyard and is coming up next month, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This show is part of an entire week of car shows, also worthing of your time. This is a vintage show with around 200 collector vehicles on display, and they usually reveal a surprise upcoming product from one of the auto industry leaders.  The largest and longest running car show in the U.S. is the Chicago Auto Show. This event boasts over one million square feet of sho ... read more

Good Old Days Comes to Pacific Grove, April 14 & 15, 2018

Good Old Days Comes to Pacific Grove, April 14 & 15, 2018

Every April, the Monterey Peninsula comes alive when the City of Pacific Grove shuts down Lighthouse Avenue for two days to accommodate Good Old Days, a truly locals-friendly community event that incorporates food, arts and crafts, live music, a classic car show and--best of all--a good old-fashioned parade complete with marching bands, fire engines, and kids. Locals flock to this event, as it marks the first big event of the season. People see friends they haven’t run into since the previous fall (at the other bookend to the summer season, the West End Celebration in Sand City) and celebrate the fact that they are privileged to live in such a wonderful place. It’s an event for all ages and all tastes. Kids love the petting zoo, pony and carnival rides and the parade. Teens like hanging out on the midway watching dance demos, munching delicious fair food…and the parade. Elon Musk’s Space Roadster

Elon Musk’s Space Roadster

By now, just about everyone on Earth knows that Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk chose to launch his red Tesla Roadster into space on February 2, 2018, atop the maiden flight of that company’s Falcon Heavy rocket. It carried a mannequin named “Starman” dressed in a space suit and the car’s dashboard screen displayed the message “Don’t Panic” while David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” played on the car’s sound system. Hmm. Some might find this a bit odd…others think it’s kind of intriguing while others still think it’s a monumental waste of a cool car. Whatever the public opinion, one thing is absolutely true: the stunt generated a huge amount of interest in SpaceX and its new generation of a launch vehicle, a rocket that is now the most powerful rocket now operational. For its first flight, a weighted payload was necessary, and typically, NASA would have used concrete blocks to simulate the weight of car ... read more

Back to the Future Again

Back to the Future Again

Doc Brown would be proud. Nooka was an American company that designed and produced lifestyle merchandise from, 2004 to 2016. Initially, they were known for avant-garde watches. Founded in New York, NY by artist Matthew Waldman, the company’s products explored the intersection of design and technology. In 2012, Nooka decided to repurpose a few Delorean sports cars as New York City taxicabs. The stunt was intended as promotion for the company. the automobiles have ‘come to symbolize the future’ and communicate the brand’s ‘futuristic philosophy.’ According to Nick Lubrano, the Nooka designer who carried out the concept, “The automobiles have come to symbolize the future and communicate the brand’s futuristic philosophy.” Building the cars in Ireland between 1981 and 1983, the Delorean company eventually folded, due in part to some shady business practices perpetrated by its eponymous founder, John Delorean. Enjoy the Monterey Peninsula With a Road Trip

We didn’t really experience much of a winter this year--there were weeks that felt more like spring in San Diego than winter in Monterey. And because the snowpack in the Sierra was below average, many Bay Area residents forsook the mountains chose to visit us instead. If you needed proof, just drive down and see the lines of cars parked along Highway 1 outside of Point Lobos on any given weekend day.   Now that the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am has folded up its tent for another year, we have a short period when tourism typically slows down a tad. And that means we can get out and enjoy our precious little slice of heaven without fighting the crowds that will be arriving in the coming months. And what better way to see the sights around here than from behind the wheel of your favorite car? Here are some suggested road trips.   Carmel Valley The route starting from Highway 1 and Carmel Valley is sublime. The valley enjoys some of the best weather in the area, and the ... read more

The Clambake is Coming…

The Clambake is Coming…

Before there was Car Week, there was the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. For many years the golf tournament founded by crooner Bing Crosby was one of the biggest visitor draws of the year. The Monterey Peninsula’s typically sleepy winter streets burst into life as golf enthusiasts and celebrity watchers came to town. And that was the idea.   Bing had started his tournament in Rancho Santa Fe in 1937. It was a relaxed affair, a way for the singer to hang out with his celebrity buddies and pro golfers while getting in a few rounds (of golf and cocktails). A highlight of the event was the clambake--hence the tournament’s nickname. The shindig was suspended for the duration of World War II. After hostilities ended, Ted Durein, a Monterey Peninsula Herald sports writer teamed up with some community leaders to pitch the idea to Der Bingle of bringing the tournament north to Pebble Beach. In the late 1940s, Monterey’s sardine industry was waning, and tourism was ... read more

Safe Driving Tips for Halloween

Halloween is here and with it come the added dangers of excited goblins running in the streets in their dark costumes. Robert’s Collision & Repair reminds you that trick-or-treaters can be indecisive and impulsive, and their costumes may hinder their peripheral vision. Please be careful and follow these Halloween safe driving tips:      Drive at least 5 mph below the posted speed limit to give yourself extra reaction time should children dart into the street. Keep an eye out for pirates and princesses walking in streets, on medians and curbs. Look out for children crossing streets. They may not be paying attention to traffic and could run out from between parked cars in the middle of the block. Be careful entering driveways and alleys.   A quick reminder that Halloween may bring out some little devils. Halloween Pumpkin Carving Tips

Halloween Pumpkin Carving Tips

Halloween is just a few weeks away. Time make your pumpkin a Jack-o-Lantern. Here are some pumpkin carving tips:   Be sure your pumpkin has a thick green stem. The greener the stem, the fresher the pumpkin. The thicker the stem, the thinker the pumpkin and the better for carving. Plan your design. If you’re an artist, freehand may work for you. The rest of us work better with a plan. Use a pen to draw you design before you get out you blade. Think outside the carving tool kit. The more complicated your design, the more creative your tools. Think outside the kit. Try clay sculpting ribbons and tools, Exacto knives, and zesters and be sure they’re sharp. Empty the inside. Take the time to thoroughly scrape the inside of your pumpkin. Scraps and bits of pumpkin meat can mold and ruin your entire project.    Keep your pumpkin moist.  Most carved pumpkins can last up to two weeks but as soon as you cut into them, they begin to dry out. How To Keep Your Cool In Monterey's September Weather

As you know, the Monterey Peninsula is known for its cool weather. Our cool weather is what attracts people from all over so they can give their sweat glands a rest. That’s why we’ve come up with a few reminders about how to keep cool in your car while you’re commuting around Monterey, Seaside, Pacific Grove, Carmel, Marina, Salinas, Big Sur, and Moss Landing.   Have your air conditioning system checked. If your car’s A/C unit is blowing hot, or takes a while to cool down, come into Robert’s Collision & Repair for an inspection. Your air conditioning system may need more refrigerant, or it may have some leaks that need repair, but we won’t know for sure until we’ve inspected it. Don’t leave the kids or the dogs in the car. Welcome to Car Week, August 11 - 20, 2017

Car week in Monterey takes place August 11 - 20, and it just so happens to be one of our favorite events here on the Monterey Peninsula! This year’s events will be scattered across Seaside, Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, and Pebble Beach. Monterey Car Week has become one of the most popular car shows in the world. Considering the week-long festivities and famous cars and car designs, it’s no wonder why! The show starts off on Alvarado Street in downtown Monterey with a car show that has over 30 classic cars lining the roads. The events later on in the week at Pebble Beach are so revered that many sponsors and car makers use the stage to introduce new car models and even offer test drives! The sponsors are not only car companies, they are also sponsored by Rolex and a handful of yacht and private jet representatives. It’s certainly a high mark for the attendants to meet, but the great thing about Car Week is that as long as you have a love for cars and make some tim ... read more

4th of July Celebration & Traffic Safety

4th of July Celebration & Traffic Safety

The 4th of July is one of the most highly anticipated celebrations of the summer, from the cookouts on the beach to the sparklers to the 4th of July parade that marches down Alvarado Street in Monterey each year. However, it can become extremely dangerous pretty quickly.   Given the road closures, drinks, and fireworks that we enjoy each year, the potential for harm is pretty high. According to the United States Department of Transportation, in 2015 over 200 people were killed in car and motorcycle accidents involving alcohol. On top of that, according to the National Fire Protection Agency, fireworks caused more than 15,000 fires in 2013, and a quarter of all the fires reported that year were reported on, you guessed it, the 4th of July. Surprisingly, the most common cause of fire-related injury is sparklers! In short, it is not uncommon to have serious consequences from being unsafe on the 4th of July. Including a few safety boundaries is a necessity for keeping your friends ... read more

New Year’s Eve Driving Safety Tips

With New Year’s Eve approaching, many of us will be out and about celebrating with friends and family. To keep yourself and your passengers safe, here are some important driving tips that will keep you safe as the clock turns to 2015: Make certain your vehicle is in good repair so you won’t have to worry about pulling off, late at night, on the side of the road. Be sure to have a full tank of gas, too. While at a party, don’t leave your drink unattended, because someone may spike it and that is dangerous. Don’t drink and drive! Period. Be sure to have a designated driver who is not going to drive with a “buzz”. Sober is the only option for your designated driver. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, both on the road and while walking around. Don’t play with fireworks or guns. You’ll just be inviting trouble with the law, at best; or injury, at worst. Don’t go out alone. Stay with your group of friends, even while driving or walking. Make sure your pets are safe and secur ... read more

There is no doubt that holiday travel with your family can be taxing. We want to make sure the time spent in your car is as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. Try these tips: Don’t forget the pillows. Traveling is exhausting. Make sure your kids are comfortable enough to take a nap. A car charger is a must. Stretch your legs at a pit stop: playgrounds, public libraries, coffee shops, aquariums etc. The list of possible pit stops are endless. Try incorporating one into your travel plan. It, most likely, will turn into a mini-adventure! Be prepared for cold weather. Bring emergency blankets, coats, and sweaters for your entire family. Dry erase boards are the best. Are Your Tires Ready for the Holidays?

Most people think of major road trips when they plan for tire service and maintenance. However, it’s the daily wear and tear on your vehicle, like your commute to work, trips to the mall, driving the kids to their activities, etc., that create the need for new tires. Be safe as we enter the holiday season and come to Robert’s Auto for tire service and maintenance. What kind of tire services do we provide? Safety Tips for Halloween Driving

Though Halloween is one of the most popular secular holidays in the United States, it can also be one of the most dangerous nights for pedestrians. As children and their families walk from house to house for trick-or-treating, the excitement often overrides their street smarts as pedestrians. Similarly, drivers can become easily distracted and harm pedestrians unintentionally. To make sure that everyone stays safe, here are reminders of common traffic laws in the State of California: Right-of-Way at Crosswalks -The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection. Vehicles Stopped for Pedestrians - When a vehicle is stopped at a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to allow a pedestrian to cross the roadway, vehicles approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass the stopped vehicle. Unmarked crosswalks are also known as unprotected intersections. Some ... read more

Driving Tips for Labor Day Weekend

The Labor Day holiday marks the final days of Summer. For many families, it’s that last chance to go on a road trip before school kicks into high gear. Many people will be hitting the road over the Labor Day weekend, so here are a few safe driving tips to keep in mind. Make sure you have a first aid kit stashed somewhere in your vehicle, just in case someone needs to mend a “boo-boo”. Traffic is going to be heavy, so try to hit the road earlier or later than everyone else. Make sure your tires have plenty of tread, are properly inflated, and that your spare tire is ready to be used at a moment’s notice. To get more fuel into your gas tank, try to fill up with gas in the early morning before the day gets hot. Be sure to pack lots of drinking water in the car so you and your passengers stay hydrated. Pack a few healthy snacks, too. For antsy children, bring some games or toys along to keep them occupied. Carry traveling pillows so your passengers can sleep more comfortably dur ... read more

November = Time To Prepare Your Vehicle For Holiday Travel!

Welcome, November! Now that you’re here, we are officially in a Halloween candied, sugar-overloaded stupor and heading straight into the throes of the holiday season. Tis the season to be on the roads more often than usual, so here are some helpful reminders to prepare the family vehicle for holiday travel: Oil Changes: If you look at your vehicle’s odometer, do you notice anything? If it has been over 3000 miles since your last oil change with conventional oil, perhaps it’s time for a new oil change. If you have a vehicle that uses synthetic oil, you may need to come in for an oil change if it’s been over 6000 miles. If you’re not sure, check with Robert’s Auto Repair and we’ll give you a status on your vehicle’s recommended oil change time frame. Minor and Major Service: Keep looking at your vehicle’s odometer and see if you notice if it has reached 15K, 30K, 45K, 60K, 75K, 90K, 105K, or 120K miles. If it has passed the odd numbers, like 15K, 45K ... read more
